Mapping Knowing Unknowing

2008/09 (pen on paper, cartography)

Using cartography to explore the known / the unknown.

Interested in the similarities between mapping and language. I used the physical nature of the written word to create lanscape of several countries. The word casting, describing, capturing, founding, discovering an area. Leading further into the non tangible (the unknown) and exploring that area (bringing it into the known). Exploiting the physical nature of written language, and its break of idea from word by its lack of existence beyond the meaning. Drawing the lines between mapping and knowing; then mapping what I don't know.

Performance and photography

2004/05 (photographic bodies of work)

Exploring the performative and theatrical elements of photography, performing and utilising the ability of photography to compress time and space onto one plane

Exposing a negative for long periods of time, allowing everything that happens in front of the camera; in the view range of the lens, to be captured in within a single frame, compressing time. Allowing one moment, and forty minutes to be regarded on the same plane. The performative elelment came from me enacting something in front of the camera, whilst the shutter was open, captureing it on film, and also losing its definition, or taking on a new definition.
